Coach Rising Star: Rebecca Voelpel

Health and wellness professional Rebecca Voelpel is dancing through life. Although she now wears many hats in the industry, her passion started as a professional dancer and kickstarted her love for movement. After starting a corporate job after college, she felt like she was missing something. Although her initial foray into becoming a coach was self-motivated, it quickly shifted to focus on the benefits it brought to those she was coaching.ย

From coaching, to becoming the Director of Group Exercise and the Northeast Regional Sales Head for Total Gym, Rebeccaโ€™s passion for helping others and changing the health and wellness landscape is admirable. Coach360 had the pleasure of interviewing Rebecca to learn more about her story.ย

Tell us your story in as little or as much detail as possible. Why did you become a coach? What do you consider your โ€œsuperpowerโ€?

I began dancing at the age of four, and movement has always felt like my natural habitat. Dancing professionally and in college, I found a deep sense of fulfillment. So, when I transitioned into the corporate world, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. The monotony of a sedentary office job, working towards someone else’s goals, simply wasn’t enough.

To be honest, I initially got into fitness for selfish reasons. I missed the thrill of performing and was drawn to the opportunity to teach at a local boutique fitness studio. However, the transition to leading group classes presented a new challenge. I had to find a balance between my natural performing abilities and the responsibilities of a coach. As a group fitness instructor, I realized that effective leadership is as essential as performance. After all, no one wants to attend a boring class!

What was the turning point or motivation for you to become a certified coach?

While my initial motivation for becoming a coach was personal, I quickly realized its broader purpose. Witnessing the joy and benefits that movement brings to people’s lives has been incredibly rewarding. I love that classes and personal training sessions offer an escape from daily stressors, providing a space to focus on oneself and prioritize physical well-being.

The spark of joy I see in people’s eyes when they overcome challenges, try new things, or achieve personal milestones is truly inspiring. Whether it’s pushing through a difficult class, discovering new muscles with SoulBody Barre, or increasing their incline on the Total Gym Encompass, their accomplishments are a testament to the power of movement.

What were some of the personal challenges you faced during your professional journey? How were youย  able to address and overcome these challenges?ย

Imposter syndrome is a recurring challenge for me. When I started out in group fitness at 23, it felt like everyone was far ahead. I yearned to be where they were, presenting on big time stages, choreographing with brands, and teaching packed classes. However, I learned to appreciate my progress and enjoy the journey.

Even today, I grapple with self-doubt and the fear of not being taken seriously. This internal battle is ongoing. To combat these feelings, I focus on my purpose and remind myself of what I bring to the table. My mission is to make fitness fun, accessible, and a catalyst for healthier, happier lives. By reaffirming my purpose, I continue to work to overcome imposter syndrome and be appreciative of the challenges and lessons that brought me to where I am today.

What kind of support and resources did you find most valuable during your journey to becoming a health, fitness and/or wellness professional?

Building relationships with trusted mentors or advisors is invaluable. Whether it’s a colleague, business coach, or industry friend, having someone to confide in about challenges, opportunities, and daily experiences is immensely helpful. Learning from those who have achieved what I aspire to is essential.

Cultivating relationships and expanding my network has been instrumental in my growth. By surrounding myself with supportive individuals, I’ve gained valuable insights, advice, and opportunities.ย

Based on your experiences, what advice would you give to aspiring coaches who are aspiring to have a career in the health, fitness and wellness industry?

Be YOU! It may sound clichรฉ, but authenticity is key in an industry where personality and connection matter. People want instructors who are genuine and relatable, not cookie-cutter copies. Embrace what makes you unique, whether it’s your speaking style, writing, or personal style. Let your individuality shine through!”

Where do you see yourself in the health, fitness and wellness industry in 5 years?

In the next five years (and hopefully fifty!), I see myself teaching barre, yoga, and Pilates while fostering connections and promoting healthier lifestyles. I aim to make a significant impact on gyms across the U.S. by implementing sustainable, revenue-generating group fitness programs that energize members and staff.

My goal is to empower group fitness instructors to teach engaging, science-based classes that showcase their individuality. These futuristic questions always intrigue me, as I’ve always dreamed of creating a personalized career path that combines my passions for health, wellness, and business. I’m excited to continue growing and learning in this dynamic industry!
