Lee Donald compressed what typically takes decades into twelve months of relentless preparation. This Aberdeen-based fitness entrepreneur climbed the world’s tallest peak while simultaneously redefining what’s possible when determination and proper planning collide.
Donald’s story carries weight because it started in the depths of struggle. Fifteen years of eating disorders, alcohol addiction, and depression created a foundation most would consider insurmountable. Yet these experiences became the bedrock for her business philosophy and her mountaineering mindset, proving that the steepest climbs often begin at the lowest points.
Lee Donald made mountaineering history on May 13th, 2024, becoming the seventh female from Scotland to summit Mount Everest. What sets her already remarkable achievement apart is the compressed timeline that brought her to this point. Starting as a complete beginner, Donald committed to reaching the summit within a year, a goal that defies conventional mountaineering wisdom.
Her preparation began with winter skills courses in Scotland, where she learned fundamental techniques using ice axes and crampons. The journey then took her across Europe and South America, summiting the highest peaks in France and Italy, followed by five high-altitude volcanoes in Ecuador. Each climb was a step in training and a testing ground for how her body would respond to extreme conditions.
The challenge intensified due to Donald’s exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, a condition that causes her airways to constrict during physical exertion in extreme temperatures. This respiratory condition meant every breath at altitude became a calculated effort. During her Everest attempt, rhinitis struck during the acclimatization period, forcing her to skip crucial rotations and attempt a direct summit push—a risky strategy that dramatically reduced her chances of success.
Despite these obstacles, Donald reached the summit, proving that methodical preparation and mental resilience can overcome physical limitations and compressed timelines. Her experience symbolized completing a journey from rock bottom to the top of the world. Now, she’s setting her sights on K2, aiming to become the second Scottish woman and the first woman from Aberdeen to summit the world’s second-highest and most dangerous peak in June 2026.
Donald’s fitness business began in 2011 with no clients, equipment, or premises, just a qualification and her mother’s living room. Starting by training her cousin’s boss in that makeshift space, she built what would become a multi-award-winning enterprise, celebrating its 14th anniversary this year. The business has evolved from those humble beginnings into a comprehensive fitness business serving women across Aberdeen and online.
Her service offerings reflect a deep understanding of what women need to succeed in fitness. The Max Experience, created specifically for busy women, addresses the unique challenges women face when balancing family responsibilities with health goals. Personal training services form the core of her business, supplemented by personalized nutrition services that tackle the relationship between food and wellbeing. BODYMAX BLAST™, her signature 30-minute circuit-based fitness class exclusively for women, creates community while delivering efficient workouts. Donald has also expanded into keynote speaking, sharing her journey from addiction and eating disorders to business success and mountaineering achievements.
The recognition has been substantial and consistent. In 2025 alone, Donald collected her 30th business award, including Health & Fitness Entrepreneur of the Year from Corporate Livewire Global Awards, Female Fitness Entrepreneur of the Year UK from Global Excellence Awards, and Female Fitness Entrepreneur of the Year from Scotland’s Prestige Awards. Her blog ranks among the top 40 UK personal trainer blogs, while E2 Media honored her with their Business Award for Excellence.
The mountains teach lessons that gyms cannot. Every successful summit requires the same fundamentals that build lasting businesses, including careful planning, consistent effort, and the ability to push through discomfort when conditions become challenging. Donald’s dual success in fitness entrepreneurship and high-altitude mountaineering isn’t coincidental, as both require the mental fortitude to continue when every instinct suggests stopping.
The same mindset tools that helped her overcome addiction and eating disorders now help her clients build confidence and achieve their own peaks. Whether she’s guiding someone through their first workout or preparing for K2, Donald proves that the most powerful motivator is showing others what becomes possible when they dare to start climbing.
