Evolving Business Strategies for Future-Proofing Your Coaching Business

The health and wellness industry is rapidly changing, and in the face of change, independent coaches are facing unprecedented challenges. Recent shifts in major players like Beachbody, which has recently undergone a rebrand to BODi and reduced its workforce by about a third, have left coaches without the support and opportunities they once relied on.

With evolving business models in the fitness sector, an issue has been exacerbated for dedicated professionals seeking to build sustainable careers. Luckily, there is a solution; Marketplace by Coach360, a game-changing platform designed to empower the hybrid health and fitness coach in this new landscape. Unlike restrictive past models, this solution allows coaches to build professional profiles to attract job seekers, access essential business tools, launch specialized groups, and find security in the job they love doing.

The Evolving Business Model Problem

The health and wellness industry is constantly shifting, often embracing new approaches while discarding outdated practices. As business models and designs evolve, there becomes a lack of security in the workplace, leaving coaches at a loss.

A prime example of this is Beachbody Co. Inc.’s recent transformation into BODi. This shift represents a significant departure from their original MLM model towards a more streamlined single-affiliate network.

As part of this transition, BODi implemented several changes:

These strategic moves reflect BODi’s focus on diversifying revenue sources and prioritizing direct sales over recruiting salespeople. This is true for models outside of Beachbody and other methodologies that once felt like foolproof ways to secure income and stability. Whether you are an independent coach, in a studio, or a hybrid professional, taking steps to find structured programs and directions shouldn’t be confusing or complicated.

The entrance of a platform like Marketplace by Coach360 offers coaches greater control over their success. Many coaches struggle to thrive in this industry, as it is competitive and doesn’t offer a lot of guidance. Marketplace by Coach360 is meant to be a toolkit for talented coaches who want to steer clear of the instability and confusion the industry currently creates, providing a dedicated framework and the necessary instruments to help them reach all of their professional goals.

Empowering Certified Coaches And Trainers

Entering the health and wellness space as a personal trainer, health coach, nutritionist, or any other role where you are taking charge of someone’s wellness, passion is required, but so is credibility. With the emergence of social media, it has been easier to spread information online regardless of expertise or credibility. Credible certification provides a structured education, ensuring the necessary knowledge to guide individuals safely and effectively. Being certified not only sets you apart from competition, it equips you to make a meaningful impact on those you’re charged with leading.

The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) is no stranger to the importance of certification. As a leading organization dedicated to providing evidence-based certifications and advanced credentials for fitness professionals for more than three decades, they have over 1.5 million certified fitness and wellness professionals under their name. As a well-known and highly respected brand, NASM has many features that make them stand out from the crowd.

Empowering Certified Coaches and Trainers

NASM has been a successful certification and boasts over 1.5 million certified professionals under their name, but it isn’t because it’s an easy certification. Its comprehensive focus on producing educated professionals in the health and wellness sector make it a sought after certifications for those wanting to be taken seriously in the industry.

Tony Ambler-Wright, Master Instructor at NASM, told me “NASM is committed to grasping the real-world needs of personal trainers and coaches and to providing continuous solutions that surpass expectations”. Not only do they offer personal training certifications, they also certify nutrition and wellness coaches, and offer specialization courses like Group Fitness Instructor and Physique and Bodybuilding Coach. Offering an array of opportunities for coaches to expand their expertise, and of course, their business offerings. The courses include digital learning tools, including NASM One, for their certified coaches and trainers.

Ongoing Support for Longevity

Not only does NASM take their certifications seriously, they are invested in the long-term success of their coaches and trainers. They offer ongoing support and resources to assist in business development, life-long learning and growth, and building a supportive community within their network. NASM has direct partnerships with over 12,000 employers and organizations worldwide – offering their trainers direct access to amazing employment opportunities.

With hundreds of opportunities to grow, learn, and expand your expertise, NASM provides access to a rich index of educational resources, courses, and specialization courses. This includes the opportunity to join NASM One, a comprehensive platform designed to support NASM-certified professionals as they continue their journey into growing their businesses. It offers amazing resources like:

NASM One is the solution to streamlining the professional journey so trainers and coaches can build a profitable business by integrating education, management tools, and community support in one place for all their coaches and trainers needs.

The Power of Certification

While the world has shifted and it doesn’t take a certification to become popular on the internet for your workouts or physique, it is still a highly valued component for anyone hoping to take on clients. This is especially true when taking on a role that involves physical activity; understanding anatomy, physiology, and exercise science is critical when working with the human body to avoid injury and maximize results.

Some other important reasons to be certified:

Tony further shared, “We want our trainers and coaches to feel confident in their knowledge, skills, and abilities in order to meet and exceed the growing demands and needs of the clients they serve.“

Final Thoughts

Entering the health and wellness industry demands more than just passion; it requires a steadfast commitment to credibility and expertise. The National Academy of Sports Medicine exemplifies this commitment through its rigorous and comprehensive certification programs. By equipping fitness professionals with the essential knowledge and skills, NASM not only sets a high standard but also empowers individuals to make a significant impact in their clients’ lives.

In a world where anyone can share fitness tips online, NASM certifications ensure that trainers stand out by providing evidence-based education and ongoing support. This dedication to professional development, ethical responsibility, and community building underscores the true value of being certified. As Tony Ambler-Wright aptly puts it, NASM is dedicated to exceeding the expectations of both trainers and their clients.

Coach To Entrepreneur: Janelle Trujillo

In March of 2020, Janelle Trujillo faced a series of events that changed the trajectory of her life. Instead of losing faith when she was being tested. She allowed the challenge to serve as an opportunity to level up, grow, and lean into the fitness community for strength and support. Little did she know, this ask for support would morph into one of the greatest gifts of her future.

Janelle leveraged social media to connect with her community, offering free workouts and support during Covid, and this act of authentic selflessness proved that adaptability in this industry is essential to evolving personally and professionally.

Janelle encourages others to share their own turning points and how they transformed challenges into opportunities, fostering a sense of community and inspiration among her network. Her work has led her to finding passion in helping others and making the health and wellness lifestyle accessible to a network that may not have it without her.

What drew you into the health, fitness, and wellness industry?

I would say that my purpose in life is to be in this industry. This purpose became clear to me during a particularly difficult period in my life, as often happens with life’s callings. In my journey of recovering from an eating disorder, deep depression, and a suicide attempt, I discovered I was gifted with a chance and unique opportunity to assist others in find what I needed… true and complete wellness that includes physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well being.

I understood from my personal experience, despite my limited education at the time, that these aspects of health were deeply interconnected and we in the health and wellness industry needed to address all of them. Back in the early 2000s when I began, these ideas were relatively unknown, vague, and, to be frank, unpopular. Fast-forward 24 years, and the landscape of our field has transformed significantly, for which I am immensely grateful. The advancements in neuroscience have provided substantial evidence of the impact of healthy lifestyles and habits on the brain, influencing how we feel, behave, and experience life overall.

What was the turning point or motivation for you to move from being a fitness professional to an entrepreneur?

Like many in my industry, it was the year we were no longer “essential”. In March of 2020, I found myself moving to a new state right in the middle of what seemed like the world was closing for business. I remember unpacking boxes and the next day thinking, okay… “What CAN I do?” So I got on Instagram and Facebook, spending one hour on each platform five days a week for three months, instructing free workouts for anyone who followed me. At that time, I had around 3-5K followers, and to my surprise, the same 10-12 people would join in. I thought for sure that because we all had more time on our hands and everyone was on social media, I would have more takers for a free workout, but this was not the case. That’s when I discovered that it was not time that was holding people back from adopting exercise into their lives; it was that their unhealthy habits were taking up the time instead.

I was exercising more because I had already developed the habit, and this habit helped reduce my stress during a very stressful time, but that was not the case for many. With health clubs viewed as “nonessential,” it made it really hard for people who did not already exercise to feel that they should adapt to it now. So I took a good, hard look at what the real problem was, and it was not more workout routines or healthy eating plans; it was teaching people how to create habits that actually supported their overall health so they could actually stick to the workouts and eating plans. I spent the next few years researching every book on habits and became a certified health coach, nutrition coach, mental health, and well-being coach. I was not going to wait for health clubs to re-open. I knew I needed to start something now!

What was the impetus for you to create your brand? What was the journey of its creation?

My first brand, Health Habit Coaching, was crafted from my purpose of helping others find true wellness, combined with my 20 years in the industry and my newfound profound realization that we needed to deliver more in terms of tools to help others change behaviors, systems, and habits to create sustainable results.

My new brand, Executive Health Habit Coaching, was created after starting this business and observing my husband take on a new role as a managing partner for a Fortune 100 company. In summary, without healthy habits established, business endeavors, responsibilities, and stressors would have taken over our time and energy, decreasing our physical and mental capacity to continue at the rate we needed and wanted to go.

What void is your brand serving within the health, fitness, and wellness industry? What differentiates the brand?

The need for providing a systemized coaching approach that prioritizes the healthy habits that will help leaders, business owners, and entrepreneurs sustain the energy and strength in mind and body to continue at the pace needed for sustainable performance and growth. There are coaches for athletes so they can be their best both physically and mentally at their jobs; why not a coach for other professionals? I would love for one day every top-tier leader, CEO, and C-Suite executive to have their own Executive Health Coach as part of their team.

What was the “aha” moment that made you decide to move forward with this idea?

Being in the space with executives and having genuine conversations, I would hear the same thing over and over: “I need to eat better, be more consistent with my workouts, and probably not drink so much.” What I was hearing was that there was little to no priority for healthy habits and no systems to make this happen. I also noticed that stress was often the catalyst for developing unhealthy habits, something I know very well. Stress in life and business is not easily removed, but how we deal with and manage the stressors makes all the difference in how we show up, perform, lead, and succeed. This is when I knew that there was a need, and I wanted to be part of the solution.

What kind of support and resources did you find most valuable throughout your journey to becoming an entrepreneur?

As far as support, it really helps to have a live-in cheerleader who challenges and encourages you every step of the way. My husband is my greatest support, and without his big dreams for me, I would have probably been just okay with being okay. I now see beyond what is, to what can and will be, and I am so excited to continue to work faithfully towards it.

As far as resources, Coach360 is one. Connecting with others in the industry, especially as a solo entrepreneur, is so important. Investing in live seminars like Todd Durkin’s Impact Summit and being connected in the community, such as teaching at a local yoga studio or being part of a business women’s group, are also valuable resources.

What challenges have you faced on your journey and how did you overcome them?

Where do I start… Honestly, the greatest challenges I have faced have been within my own mind. Having the courage to step out of my comfort zone was not easy, and I still wake up with the prayer that my fears of rejection will not hold me back from showing up in a way that allows me to make the greatest impact while I am on this earth.

Now that you are a business owner, what aspects of your role bring you the most satisfaction? How do you measure success in your business?

Hands down, my favorite part is coaching. I love being with people and helping them see the strength and solutions that lie inside each and every one of them. Being able to help someone not only improves his or her health but actually helps them live happier and longer. I can’t think of a better job. I measure success by how many of my clients refer me to others and have seen a positive impact on their own lives.

Based on your experiences, what advice would you give to professionals in this industry who have an idea for a product or service and would like to make the leap to entrepreneurship?

Know the problem you are solving and whom you are solving it for. Get out from behind the computer or phone and connect with people in person. As Todd Durkin says, “Be In The Room.” Create systems for your business that will allow you to work more on the things you love to do. If you are doing things for your business that are out of your comfort zone, but you know they will help bring value to others, do it. Have a servant’s heart, give more then you ever receive and you will always be overflowing with blessings.

Staffing Issues in the Fitness Industry

With several factors at play, many gyms and studios are facing a staffing crisis. With high turnover, inability to build staff, and many other factors, clubs must look at the problem to find a solution. They face challenges such as:

Many more factors are contributing to the staffing crisis faced by studios and gyms, but these are some of the top issues the industry is facing. David Van Daff, The Vice President, Industry Development and Public Affairs at NASM stated, “Staffing challenges in the fitness industry have long been an issue, with recruiting, hiring, and retaining skilled professionals becoming even more difficult in today’s competitive landscape.” Additionally, he states, “At NASM, we counter this trend by ensuring our professionals are well-prepared with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for early success, while also providing a clear pathway for ongoing career growth.” Luckily, there is a solution.

With issues across the industry for both employers and coaches, this couldn’t come at a better time. Employers are facing issues beyond just recruiting and hiring. David also mentioned, “Over recent years, many employers have reduced resources allocated for onboarding and staff development leading to a widening gap between expectations and readiness of new hires.” Although Covid is no longer affecting gyms as it once did, the ripple effect from gyms and studios closing can still be felt across the industry.

This solution is meant to:

In an industry that has so much to offer, it’s important to have the resources available to every part of the ecosystem to make this a success. Lack of staffing, work, or the resources to market should never come between you and your ability to change lives.

Healthy Hangouts: A Shifting Paradigm For Social Culture

The drinking and partying culture in the United States is changing with rapid ferocity. Whether it’s mindfulness and joining Dry January or making a vow to drink less, over two in five US citizens said they wanted to drink less in 2024. Projections suggest this trend will continue to gain momentum in 2025 and beyond. With the increase in alcohol abstinence, people are looking for innovative ways to be social and meet like-minded communities.

There’s been a surge of alcohol-free options popping up around the world, but there is a need for more. Traditional spaces like bars and restaurants are offering non-alcoholic sections on their menus and entrepreneurs are seizing opportunities to fill the gap for mindful social spaces. We can expect to see this trend evolve and expand as the diversification of options outside of alcohol expands, more people practice mindfulness, and spaces are being presented that offer a fun and inventive social experience.

What is a Healthy Hangout

The concept of a “Healthy Hangout” emerged from a growing need for spaces that cater to alcohol-sober and sober-curious individuals, where socializing doesn’t revolve around drinking. These innovative venues prioritize health-conscious connections without alcohol.

These spaces have grown in popularity for:

Providing health and community in one space is a particularly powerful tool for creating change and providing opportunity. The shift towards mindfulness is just beginning.

Examples of Healthy Hangouts

Healthy hangouts are popping up around the world, slowly, but surely, inviting those who are health-conscious to experience a new type of social experience. They come in many forms including cafes, “bars”, pop-up events, markets, and dedicated spaces. Coffee and Chill, advertised as The Social Wellness Club for example, curates events with coffee, cold plunges, saunas, wellness beverages, and other fun experiences to bring community together every other Sunday in Venice, CA, Miami, San Diego, and Bondi.

Othership is another example of a fun, healthy hangout option, known as a supportive, alcohol-free, body-positive, community space for all. They offer one-on-one, self-guided, and social experiences to elevate your mind, body, spirit, and social circle. Their offerings range from a tea lounge, sauna, cold plunge, and breathwork experiences.

Another fun example is MUD\WTR®, most well known for their beverages that serve as an alternative to coffee, they also have a dedicated space in Santa Monica, CA. The space includes a sauna, cold plunge, co-working space, events, and classes. They even host a Mindful Market, where they gather various mindful wellness brands, food, drink, playtime, and music all converging for a fun, social, and conscious experience.

These spaces offer an alternative to the normal party and social scenes, keeping up with industry trends and a growing interest in healthier and more fulfilling experiences. Cutting back, or forgoing alcohol altogether, has many benefits for improving physical health, mental health, weight loss journies, relationships, and your wallet. No wonder people are searching for an alternative to the partying scene.

Final Thoughts

The rise of healthy hangouts represents a significant change in social culture in the United States, reflecting a growing desire for meaningful connections and wellness-focused experiences. As more individuals embrace sober-curious lifestyles, these innovative spaces are filling a crucial gap in the market. They offer a refreshing alternative to traditional alcohol-centric venues, providing an opportunity to socialize, network, and enjoy novel activities.

Successful ventures like Coffee and Chill, Othership, and MUD\WTR® demonstrate the viability and appeal of this concept. As the trend continues to gain momentum, we can expect to see a proliferation of diverse, health-conscious social spaces across the globe. This evolution in social culture not only supports individual well-being but also fosters stronger, more authentic communities. The healthy hangout movement is more than a passing trend; it’s a reflection of a broader societal shift towards mindfulness, health, and genuine human connection.

Transforming Pain To Purpose: Hal Hargrave’s Perfect Step

Life is hard. We can all agree that even though it is beautiful, being human comes with difficult choices, feelings, and experiences. Although experiencing the hard parts of life isn’t optional, how we choose to look at them is. For Hal Hargrave, it all comes down to “choosing your hard”. As he so eloquently told me, doing the work is hard, and not doing the work is hard. Being fit is hard, and being overweight is hard. It’s up to you to choose your hard.

For many of us, taking a few steps to get to the kitchen from our couch is something we take for granted. But at The Perfect Step, no step is taken for granted, no ounce of effort goes unnoticed, and every hard choice is met with encouragement. Choosing your hard all comes down to perspective and the life you want to lead. You can make excuses, or you can show up regardless of the cards you’ve been dealt.

Hal Hargrave and The Perfect Step

After surviving a car accident at the age of 17, Hal Hargrave experienced what some would deem a nightmare, but what he deems the moment that gave him purpose and is (one of) the biggest blessings of his life. Experiencing life after his accident as a quadriplegic person and going through the care lifecycle, Hal recognized a major gap in care for those who had similar experiences. This eventually led to the birth of The Perfect Step and The Be Perfect Foundation.

The Perfect Step facilities are world-renowned activity-based therapy centers for helping people with paralysis live healthier lives. They believe that “thinking outside the chair” offers those paralyzed a life that isn’t bound to their injury. They offer special techniques and exercises for the paralysis community by trained professionals, filling a niche gap that is needed in virtually every community in the world. It goes beyond just the physical and takes a holistic approach to helping people mind, body, and spirit.

Chatting with Hal left me blown away for many reasons. Not only is he making a major difference and providing a crucial service for those in the paralysis community, but his sunny temperament, gratitude, and humility are striking. He doesn’t do this job for the glory or the money, which is evident considering that every single cent that The Be Perfect Foundation raises goes right back into helping those in the community.

Hal does this because he understands he was given a role to help others in this lifetime. For many, having an experience like Hal’s might leave them questioning, angry, or confused. Hal saw it as an opportunity to be a vessel for goodness and to support those who may not be able to do it themselves. His voice is clear and unwavering and his eyes are full of intention when he talks about his organizations and the difference it makes in the lives of those they help.

The Be Perfect Foundation

Hal sits as CEO of The Perfect Step and is also the Founder of Be Perfect Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed out of necessity to provide direct financial and emotional aid to individuals living with paralysis. As spinal cord injuries can cost around 2.5 million dollars throughout a lifetime, the need for support is evident considering on average, insurance covers 50-65% of those expenses.

This foundation helps by way of providing wheelchairs, car adaptations, financial assistance for high medical bills and outpatient therapies, and general daily medical needs for those who are living with spinal cord injuries and paralysis. They also partner with The Perfect Step and Apex Imaging Services, providing a holistic service for their constituents. This foundation is a labor of love and purpose, and every single person who works for the foundation does so out of the goodness of their heart. They have no paid roles, as the main drive of the foundation is to give back as much as possible to the community they are serving.

The Perfect Step Specialists & Franchise

The Perfect Step hires specialists based on two things. One is evaluated based on educational background, a minimum of an accredited four-year Exercise Science degree, followed by a certified governing body internally for a self-developed certification program model. This is broken down into a four-tiered model of pre-requisite standards, accrual of hands-on hours, and other growth measures. Educator is top-level level which qualifies an individual to re-teach the tiers to other interested specialists.

Secondly, Hal said he looks for those qualities you can’t teach and don’t require any “real talent” including, showing up on time, positive perspective, making an effort, having high energy, being passionate, and being prepared, alongside other intangibles that align with the mission, vision, and values of The Perfect Step. Working with the paralysis community comes with its own set of skills and understanding, and The Perfect Step guarantees the education and the disposition of their specialists are top-tier for the best possible experience for their community.

The Perfect Step is also a franchise model. With built-in marketing, intellectual property, and most importantly, the four-tier model to set specialists up for success, this is a community need and is generally a gap in the industry. As stated so thoughtfully on their website, “This isn’t just a new revenue source – it makes you a pioneer in inclusivity, strengthens your community, and can reduce member attrition to industry lows.”

Final Thoughts

When we recognize that life is full of choices, and they’re hard regardless of which we choose, we can begin to choose more wisely. Opting to view the world positively, marinating in gratitude for all of life’s blessings, and giving back to others are all choices that lead to better outcomes. Hal’s journey from a life-altering accident to founding The Perfect Step and The Be Perfect Foundation is a reminder of choice and the power of perspective and purpose.

His organization fills crucial gaps in care and support for the paralysis community, embodying the philosophy of “choose your hard”. Through their innovative approach to rehabilitation, education of specialists, and comprehensive and holistic support, they’re not just changing lives- they’re redefining the community care lifecycle. Hal’s story reminds us that our greatest challenges can be our most profound callings if we choose to face these situations with determination and a positive outlook. By transforming struggles into opportunities for growth, service, and meaningful impact on the world around us, it’s never been easier to choose your “hard”.

Leveraging Social Media For Business Success With Rebecca Voelpel

Rebecca Voelpel’s website boldly declares her mission: “I aim to light up every room I enter.” This goal extends beyond physical spaces to virtual ones as well. Having interacted with her in a digital setting, I can attest to her success in fulfilling this mission. My conversation with Becca was engaging, thought-provoking, and filled with smiles—an exchange that could have easily continued for hours.

Driven by a profound passion for health and wellness, Becca leverages her background and diverse skill set to make movement both accessible and enjoyable for a wide audience. Additionally, she offers valuable insights on social media strategy for those looking to boost their business presence online.

Who is Rebecca Voelpel

Rebecca Voelpel is a vibrant multifaceted health and fitness enthusiast. Formerly a professional ballerina, she now works full-time for Total Gym acting as their Regional Sales Rep for the Northwast as well as their Director of Group Exercise.  As if that wasn’t enough, she’s also the Program Director, Master Trainer, and Assessor at SoulBody Fitness, a woman-owned group fitness business offering classes globally.

Although Rebecca has a stacked list of credentials, it’s her passion for helping others that stands out. During Coach360’s IGNITE series, Rebecca shared her meaningful and well-positioned insight on the Education Evolved panel, where her thoughts expanded beyond the topic at hand and evolved into more expert advice on utilizing social media platforms for major success.

Leveraging Social Media for Success

Running a health and wellness business is notoriously demanding. Without deliberate efforts to recharge, entrepreneurs in this field often face burnout. As highlighted by Becca during the IGNITE panel, this contributes to high turnover rates in the fitness industry. Social media tends to portray an idealized version of working in health and wellness, but industry professionals—coaches, owners, and trainers—understand the true effort required for success.

Becca emphasized that coaches who authentically share their journey and stay true to their brand typically achieve the greatest success. It’s crucial to recognize that regardless of your affiliation with a gym, studio, or multiple brands, you maintain your distinct personal brand within that ecosystem. Differentiating yourself from others involves sharing your unique perspective, ideas, and insights. Even when leading group classes at a studio, it’s your appeal that draws people to sign up, return, and remain loyal to your sessions.

Social media can be an extremely powerful tool for building your brand awareness and business when it is leveraged correctly. Know who you are targeting, and what your message and brand are, and remain consistent. That doesn’t mean you have to post every single thing that happens in your day, but especially as you’re building a platform, you want to showcase your brand. Having consistency in font, color scheme, and aesthetics is especially important for cohesion and brand awareness.

Expert Tips for Trainers and Coaches

Rebecca laid out some important tips that coaches and trainers can utilize to boost their business success.

Don’t be afraid to get specific about what you want to do with your business, and who you want to reach, and make a plan around how your social media accounts will tackle that. Consistency, authenticity, and remaining true to your messaging and branding are the major keys to successfully utilizing social media for major results.

Final Thoughts

Rebecca Voelpel exemplifies the modern fitness professional, seamlessly blending her passion for health and wellness with savvy social media strategies. Her insights offer valuable guidance for trainers and coaches looking to establish a strong online presence. By emphasizing authenticity, knowing one’s target audience, choosing the right platform, and maintaining consistency, fitness professionals can effectively build their brand and connect with clients.

Voelpel’s success across multiple roles in the industry underscores the importance of adaptability and continuous learning. As the fitness landscape changes, embracing these strategies can help professionals stand out, foster genuine connection with their audience, and ultimately achieve greater success in their careers. Rebecca’s approach serves as an inspiring example of how to thrive in the dynamic world of health and wellness entrepreneurship.

Ruben On The Rise: Coach To Entrepreneur With Ruben Pereyra

As we age, it becomes even more imperative to take care of our bodies through activity and exercise. Regular physical activity helps to preserve muscle mass, improve joint flexibility, and enhance cardiovascular health, all of which decline as we get older. Staying active also supports mental health by reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, boosts cognitive function, and provides opportunities for social interaction and community-building – all of which are important in senior populations.

But, these are all things Ruben Pereyra knows well. Ruben is the Senior Fitness Director at WESLEY Senior Homes, where he is focused on promoting and improving the health and wellness of the senior residents. With a mission to “pioneer a movement that ensures fitness is accessible to all, regardless of age or physical limitations”, it is no wonder that Ruben was just awarded the 2024 IDEA Emerging Trailblazer of the Year.

Tell us your story in as little or as much detail as possible. Why did you become a coach? What do you consider your “superpower”?

From a young age, I always felt a calling to help people, though I didn’t quite know how that would manifest until a pivotal moment in my life. While playing soccer, I suffered a significant injury, tearing my PCL ligament. The path to recovery led me to physical therapy, where I discovered the transformative power of movement and healing. This experience sparked my passion for fitness and health, setting me on a path to make it my career.

I pursued my newfound passion academically, earning a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Cal State Long Beach University. This education provided me with a solid foundation to understand the intricate mechanics of the human body and the importance of movement in achieving overall wellness.

My career has been driven by a deep commitment to breaking ageism in fitness and redefining what senior fitness can be. I have a special passion for working with older adults, innovating and creating specialized programs that are fun and engaging and address the unique needs of those with chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. My goal is to bring senior fitness back into the spotlight and demonstrate that it is both essential and enjoyable.

What truly sets me apart in the fitness industry is what I consider my superpower: my infectious personality. I have a unique ability to make fitness sessions fun and engaging while creating an atmosphere of calmness and energy where everyone feels comfortable and safe. This allows my clients to not only achieve their fitness goals but also enjoy the journey.

Over the past 16 years, I’ve devoted myself to the fitness industry, championing the importance of movement and its profound positive impact on individuals’ lives. My journey has been one of passion and perseverance, impacting personal fitness goals and contributing to the wellness of entire communities.

As an accomplished entrepreneur, I offer various fitness services designed to cater to all age groups. These services include personal training, engaging group exercise classes, brain cognitive function training, and providing fitness direction for educational institutions and prominent corporations. My unwavering dedication to promoting physical activity and wellness across diverse populations underscores my commitment to enhancing the quality of life through movement.

I am not just a fitness professional but an award-winning fitness coach. I was recently honored as the 2024 IDEA Emerging Trailblazer of the Year. This prestigious recognition underscores my exceptional skills, dedication, and positive impact on countless lives.

In addition to hands-on training, I am a revered presenter at elite fitness conventions such as IDEA, DCAC, SCW Mania, LA Fit Expo, ACSM, and more. My informative and inspirational presentations empower other fitness professionals and enthusiasts to elevate their practices and embrace healthier lifestyles.

I continue to innovate within the fitness industry, particularly with senior programming. I am committed to educating, coaching, and inspiring senior fitness and low-impact participants ready to begin their fitness journeys. My mission is to pioneer a movement that ensures fitness is accessible to all, regardless of age or physical limitations.

My story is one of unwavering dedication, professional excellence, and an enduring commitment to improving the lives of others through movement. My ambitions and leadership in fitness are transforming bodies and elevating minds and spirits, paving the way for a healthier and more active world. Whether through personal training, corporate fitness programs, or my revolutionary new ventures, I continue to inspire and lead, making a lasting difference in the lives of those I encounter.

What was the turning point or motivation for you to become a certified coach?

The turning point in my journey to becoming a certified coach was rooted in a desire to find my true purpose, a calling that has always been to move, touch, and inspire individuals through the power of fitness and wellness. My experiences and observations made me realize this, mainly as I watched my parents and grandparents age.

Witnessing the aging process firsthand sparked a deeper motivation within me. I wanted to be an example of how fitness can truly transform one’s life, helping people age gracefully and become stronger. I saw the profound impact that movement could have on enhancing physical health and overall quality of life, and I felt a calling to share that knowledge with others.

I believe that there are no limits to one’s greatness when one puts one’s mind to it. This perspective drove me to pursue certification as a coach, ensuring that I had the skills and knowledge necessary to help people achieve their personal best through movement. I wanted to guide others in unlocking their potential, demonstrating that they could overcome obstacles and embrace a more vibrant, active lifestyle with dedication and the proper guidance.

Ultimately, my journey into becoming a certified coach was fueled by a passion to help others achieve greatness through movement and to inspire them to live healthier, more fulfilling lives at every age. This purpose continues to drive me in my work as I strive to touch and transform as many lives as possible through the empowering benefits of fitness.

What were some personal challenges you faced during your professional journey? How were you able to address and overcome these challenges? Please share as much as you are comfortable as your journey can be someone else’s guide to transformation.

Throughout my professional journey in the fitness industry, I’ve faced several personal challenges that have shaped me into the person and professional I am today. One of the most significant challenges I encountered was self-doubt. I often questioned whether I was good enough to be a part of this industry, wondering if I had what it took to make a meaningful impact.

Initially, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to make fitness my career, mainly due to concerns about financial stability and whether I would be paid my worth. The path to becoming established in this field requires continuous education and multiple certifications, which can be financially and mentally daunting.

As a young fitness professional entering the realm of senior fitness, I grappled with the reality that many people often value those who match their own age and demographic. This added another layer of doubt, as I wondered if I would be taken seriously and whether my age would hinder my ability to connect with and effectively inspire older adults.

To overcome these challenges, I focused on creating a supportive network around me. I sought out mentors and people willing to take me under their wing to show me the ropes. Their guidance was invaluable, offering expertise, reassurance, and encouragement. Networking and learning from the best in the industry became my priority, as I dedicated myself to perfecting my craft.

Self-evaluation was another critical tool in my journey. I asked for client feedback, practiced my presentations in front of the mirror, and continuously refined my approach. This process helped me find my niche, understand my “why,” and embrace my worth. It also allowed me to become comfortable in my own skin and be my authentic self, which ultimately resonated with my clients.

By surrounding myself with the right people, actively learning, and embracing continuous self-reflection, I’ve managed to turn those initial doubts into confidence. I now know my worth and my journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of staying true to oneself. My experiences have been transformative for me and those I have inspired along the way.

What kind of support and resources did you find most valuable during your journey to becoming a health, fitness and/or wellness professional?

During my journey to becoming a health, fitness, and wellness professional, several key resources and forms of support proved invaluable in shaping my career and enhancing my skills.

One of the most significant resources was attending major fitness conventions. These events provided an incredible opportunity to learn directly from other fitness professionals who excelled in my niche. Participating in workshops and sessions with industry leaders gave me valuable tips and tricks that I could implement in my classes. These insights propelled my skills and knowledge to the next level.

Obtaining certifications was another crucial step in my professional development. The specialized certifications increased my credibility in the industry and deepened my understanding of effective practices within senior fitness. This formal training complemented the practical insights I gathered from conventions and workshops.

Mentorship also played a pivotal role in my growth. Having mentors who could guide me, share their experiences, and offer advice ensured that I stayed on the right path. Their support, encouragement, and wisdom were fundamental in helping me navigate challenges and make informed decisions throughout my career.

Building a team at work that shared the same vision and mission was another cornerstone of my success. Collaborating with like-minded individuals equally passionate about pushing boundaries within senior fitness created a supportive and dynamic environment. This team effort allowed us to innovate and develop programs benefiting our clients.

Networking was also essential. By connecting with other professionals in the field, I was not only able to share experiences and strategies but also receive valuable feedback. This constant exchange of ideas helped me continuously refine my approach and improve my craft.

In summary, the combination of learning from conventions, acquiring certifications, mentorship, teamwork, and networking provided a comprehensive foundation for my career. These resources and supports were instrumental in helping me advance and succeed as a health and fitness professional dedicated to making a difference in people’s lives.

Coach Rising Star: Rebecca Voelpel

Health and wellness professional Rebecca Voelpel is dancing through life. Although she now wears many hats in the industry, her passion started as a professional dancer and kickstarted her love for movement. After starting a corporate job after college, she felt like she was missing something. Although her initial foray into becoming a coach was self-motivated, it quickly shifted to focus on the benefits it brought to those she was coaching.

From coaching, to becoming the Director of Group Exercise and the Northeast Regional Sales Head for Total Gym, Rebecca’s passion for helping others and changing the health and wellness landscape is admirable. Coach360 had the pleasure of interviewing Rebecca to learn more about her story.

Tell us your story in as little or as much detail as possible. Why did you become a coach? What do you consider your “superpower”?

I began dancing at the age of four, and movement has always felt like my natural habitat. Dancing professionally and in college, I found a deep sense of fulfillment. So, when I transitioned into the corporate world, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. The monotony of a sedentary office job, working towards someone else’s goals, simply wasn’t enough.

To be honest, I initially got into fitness for selfish reasons. I missed the thrill of performing and was drawn to the opportunity to teach at a local boutique fitness studio. However, the transition to leading group classes presented a new challenge. I had to find a balance between my natural performing abilities and the responsibilities of a coach. As a group fitness instructor, I realized that effective leadership is as essential as performance. After all, no one wants to attend a boring class!

What was the turning point or motivation for you to become a certified coach?

While my initial motivation for becoming a coach was personal, I quickly realized its broader purpose. Witnessing the joy and benefits that movement brings to people’s lives has been incredibly rewarding. I love that classes and personal training sessions offer an escape from daily stressors, providing a space to focus on oneself and prioritize physical well-being.

The spark of joy I see in people’s eyes when they overcome challenges, try new things, or achieve personal milestones is truly inspiring. Whether it’s pushing through a difficult class, discovering new muscles with SoulBody Barre, or increasing their incline on the Total Gym Encompass, their accomplishments are a testament to the power of movement.

What were some of the personal challenges you faced during your professional journey? How were you  able to address and overcome these challenges?

Imposter syndrome is a recurring challenge for me. When I started out in group fitness at 23, it felt like everyone was far ahead. I yearned to be where they were, presenting on big time stages, choreographing with brands, and teaching packed classes. However, I learned to appreciate my progress and enjoy the journey.

Even today, I grapple with self-doubt and the fear of not being taken seriously. This internal battle is ongoing. To combat these feelings, I focus on my purpose and remind myself of what I bring to the table. My mission is to make fitness fun, accessible, and a catalyst for healthier, happier lives. By reaffirming my purpose, I continue to work to overcome imposter syndrome and be appreciative of the challenges and lessons that brought me to where I am today.

What kind of support and resources did you find most valuable during your journey to becoming a health, fitness and/or wellness professional?

Building relationships with trusted mentors or advisors is invaluable. Whether it’s a colleague, business coach, or industry friend, having someone to confide in about challenges, opportunities, and daily experiences is immensely helpful. Learning from those who have achieved what I aspire to is essential.

Cultivating relationships and expanding my network has been instrumental in my growth. By surrounding myself with supportive individuals, I’ve gained valuable insights, advice, and opportunities.

Based on your experiences, what advice would you give to aspiring coaches who are aspiring to have a career in the health, fitness and wellness industry?

Be YOU! It may sound cliché, but authenticity is key in an industry where personality and connection matter. People want instructors who are genuine and relatable, not cookie-cutter copies. Embrace what makes you unique, whether it’s your speaking style, writing, or personal style. Let your individuality shine through!”

Where do you see yourself in the health, fitness and wellness industry in 5 years?

In the next five years (and hopefully fifty!), I see myself teaching barre, yoga, and Pilates while fostering connections and promoting healthier lifestyles. I aim to make a significant impact on gyms across the U.S. by implementing sustainable, revenue-generating group fitness programs that energize members and staff.

My goal is to empower group fitness instructors to teach engaging, science-based classes that showcase their individuality. These futuristic questions always intrigue me, as I’ve always dreamed of creating a personalized career path that combines my passions for health, wellness, and business. I’m excited to continue growing and learning in this dynamic industry!
